Residential Services - New Jersey

DSNJ’s residential services professionals look at all our participants individually who choose the components of our programs that will best fill their needs and wishes and move them toward greater independence. Participants and their families take an active part in this process, and the completed plan is assessed periodically to determine its effectiveness. A comprehensive residential program typically includes:

∙ Skills training to help people better manage the activities of daily living.

∙ Habilitation services to increase competence in a variety of areas.

∙ A clinical support network that can include the services of a psychiatrist, counseling therapist, behavioral specialist, and speech or occupational therapists.

∙ Medical services that can include a private physician and dentist, standby emergency arrangements, the development of plans for intervention in certain eventualities, and consultation with a psychologist or psychiatrist.

∙ Residential placements that are most appropriate, least restrictive, and best designed to foster independence, as well as support services as needed.

∙ The collection of baseline behavioral data and periodic assessments of the need for intervention.

∙ Opportunities for group and individual leisure activities, including vacations.

∙ Transportation as needed in DSNJ-owned vehicles.

In addition to group homes, Developmental Services provides such other residential services as in-home support and respite care. These alternatives are popular because the State has a long waiting list for placement in agency-managed group homes, and the services help families during the waiting period.
