Our past has prepared us. In 1947, a group of Baltimore parents
decided they could not accept the lack of educational
opportunities for their children who had mental retardation.
They founded a school, based on their belief that each child had
the right to reach the highest possible level of functioning.
They borrowed space in a church, and they called their vision The
School of the Chimes after the message of hope they heard in the
church bells.
This was the first school in Maryland for children with moderate
mental retardation. And it was the first in a long string of
successes for Chimes.
Over half a century later, Chimes has expanded to an
international multiservice agency delivering a wide range of
programs, services and supports for nearly 10,000 people of all ages
and many levels of ability. Our Family of Services include
